Cliff Rechtschaffen is a board member of the California Air Resources Board and a senior advisor with the State Energy & Environmental Impact Center at NYU Law School. He is also an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley School of Law.
Rechtschaffen served as a commissioner on the California Public Utilities Commission from 2017 through 2023 and was a senior advisor on climate and energy issues for Jerry Brown in the California Governor’s office (2011 to 2017) and in the California Attorney General’s Office (2007-2010). From 1993 to 2007 he was a professor of environmental law and co-founder and co-director of the Environmental Law & Justice Clinic at Golden Gate University. He was an original co-author of the first two editions of ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE: LAW, POLICY & REGULATION. He also is the author or co-author of books about environmental enforcement, a guide to common law remedies for protecting the environment, and other articles about environmental law and policy.
